There’s something mystifying about the tricks and routines of others when it comes to boosting productivity and making the most of their day. Even more intriguing is how the celebrities of the world choose to kickstart their day. They’re pretty busy people, after all and surely there’s more to their success than just hard work and talent. Maybe if we try to replicate their routines, elements of their lives that we’re envious of will start to rub off on us. That’s how it works, right?
The majority of the world’s most successful people start their day with an early alarm, the kind most of us consider to be closer to the middle of the night than the start of our day but these extra hours allow them time to get productive while the rest of the world remains fast asleep. Among this hub of activity, our early bird celebrities are given a few extra minutes to participate in more indulgent and thorough beauty routines – which comes with many benefits including a more active and borderline therapeutic, self-care routine every morning. For others the self-care approach is taken through a good breakfast and plenty of exercise.
If you find yourself in the need of a change and fancy mixing up your morning routine, let the routines of these five celebrities serve as your inspiration.
1. Oprah Winfrey
For Oprah, it’s a casual 6:02am start from her internal body clock. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter she explained that she always relies on her body clock, finding alarms to be too, well, alarming…
Upon waking up she ensures she starts her day with a positive mindset, citing her first thought to be, “Oh, I’m alive. Thank you!” – this in itself has to be one of the most Oprah ways to start your morning. Next it’s time for a coffee (chai tea or skim cappuccino) and a work out (20 minutes on the elliptical and 30 minutes on the treadmill) complete with twenty minutes of meditation.
Breakfast consists of boiled eggs and multigrain toast at around 8:30am. Following breakfast Oprah is ready to get stuck into business, completing all business transactions for the day by 12:30.
“I personally sign all checks over 100 grand. Even on a perfect day, I want to do it. Having grown up poor, I can never completely turn over all of my money matters to anyone else.”
When was the last time you signed a check for over 100 grand before lunch time?
2. Miranda Kerr
As a busy mum, it’s important for Miranda Kerr to keep her morning routine simple while also fitting in a little ‘me time’.
“Before showering, I dry body brush – this aids circulation and lymphatic drainage and it’s also a great way to exfoliate my body,” she explained in an interview with Vogue.com.
In terms of skincare, she maintains the simple but effective approach – cleanse, tone, moisturise using Kora Organic Foaming Cleanser, Energising Citrus Mist and the Hydrating Day and Night Cream.
Kerr looks to morning meditation plus twenty minutes of yoga or Pilates to help her prepare mentally for her day.
“I have a chakra morning meditation that I like to practice, it’s designed so you can begin your day with a bright, positive energy frequency and surround yourself with healing light.”
3. Jennifer Aniston
Jen takes early bird to new extremes starting her day at 4:30am unless of course it’s her day off during which she treats herself to a 8am or 9am lie in.
Next on the agenda is a hot water with lemon. Considering we’re repeatedly told by beauty and health experts how great this is for our skin and digestion, maybe Jen’s reported $150 million net worth will be the push we need to finally start integrating this into our morning routines.
It’s a simple soap and hot water cleanse for Aniston in the beauty department before twenty minutes of meditation, a protein shake (maca powder and cacao), a thirty minute spin class and forty minutes of yoga.
The exercising doesn’t stop there – “I do strength or just my own thing on the treadmill, the bike or the elliptical, just to change things up. Keeping your body confused is always key for me.”
Same, Jen. My body would certainly be confused with all of that exercising.
4. Tory Burch
Tory Burch may run a fashion empire but – other than her 5:45am start – her morning routing is refreshingly low maintenance and a little more relatable.
The 5:45am start allows her time to catch up with industry news each day, flipping through WWD and The New York Times.
Upon waking her three kids, 11 year old twins Nick and Henry and youngest son Sawyer, Burch squeezes in a quick run in the park before returning to get the kids showered, fed and out the door.
On the beauty front, simplicity is key – “In the morning I usually walk out the door with a wet head, put my hair in a low ponytail and go out for the day – not very exciting. I don’t blow dry my hair, except when I go to a party, just so it’s a little bit more presentable.”
We feel you, Tory.
5. Lauren Conrad
One morning routine we’re really struggling to grasp is that of Lauren Conrad. While her overall morning routine isn’t particularly complicated, one definitely obscure element is the 20 minutes she spends on the old “oil pulling” practice which consists of gargling coconut oil. Supposedly the practice helps to rid the mouth and body of bacteria but let’s just take a minute to appreciate that many of us spend twenty minutes on our makeup routine but for LC this slot is taken up with gargling coconut oil…
On the bright side, at least that’s twenty minutes of her day that she doesn’t have to speak to anyone but surely a good scrub with the toothbrush and a rinse of mouthwash would do the trick.
While our favourite celebs really commit themselves to a morning routine they know is going to make them feel better throughout the day and help them to achieve daily goals by boosting their productivity, I’m mostly just proud of myself for finding the time to change my sheets before work this morning. Maybe it’s time to start training my body clock Oprah style and working on my gym motivation to be more like Jennifer Aniston.
