According to a Forbes article published at the start of last year, among many other things, “Instagram has created a wave of social media-fueled tourism among the millennials.”
Everyone is different when it comes to choosing a holiday destination. For some it’s all about the food, for others the emphasis is on the history behind the location, then there’s the level of tranquillity, the night-life, the weather. But for others, their deciding factor comes down to something else entirely.
How good will the location look on Instagram? And bear with us, we don’t mean that unkindly.
“According to a recent survey conducted by Schofields, more than 40% of those under 33 prioritize ‘Instagrammability’ when choosing their next holiday spot,” the article continues.
“The picture-worthiness of a particular place beats other factors such as cost, local cuisine, and whether or not alcohol is freely available at a low cost. Interestingly enough, sightseeing opportunities scored as the lowest priority on the millennials’ list.”
This isn’t necessarily a reflection of the shallow qualities that millennials are often tarred with but instead a reflection of where they find the content they trust. The argument lies that Instagram, despite constantly being embroiled in authenticity debates, provides a more accurate representation of a location that would be portrayed in a commercial travel guide. That and the fact that if someone that isn’t a professional travel writer or photographer can rack up likes on their Instagram post of a location, that’s a pretty good indication of them being in a spectacular spot.
“When a local tourism board claims they’re the most desirable destination, that breeds scepticism. When other millennials make the claim, that holds more water.”
