Blemish Fighting Solutions

Fighting blemishes is tough. The battle to clear the skin and avoid dehydration it is definitely tricky; especially if too many harsh products with active ingredients are used. Every skin type will have different tolerances when it comes to products, but following the key advice and incorporating select products will set you on the right path towards achieving a clear complexion.

Keep your routine simple – too many products with active ingredients will end up doing more harm than good, as their ingredients will be fighting with one another. Removing products with added fragrance, essential oils and dyes from your skincare routine will help as these can cause inflammation.

Keep the skin clean by double cleansing every night. Use a balm cleanser like Clinique Take The Day Off to remove any makeup, dirt or SPF and follow this with a gentle cleanser like Glossier Milky Jelly Cleanser to clean the skin without disrupting the pH balance.

Blemish Solutions

Soothe irritations or minor blemishes with La Roche Posay Serozinc (which is incredible). This cult French Pharmacy face mist is a zinc sulphate solution that when sprayed on the skin instantly calms and treats. It reduces any redness, refines pores and targets blemishes, whilst also hydrating the skin. A definite must-have in your skincare arsenal.

Target the skin with a serum that penetrates the dermis (the deeper layer of skin). We love Skinceuticals Blemish + Age Defense. This is a serum that fights blemishes as well as fine lines and wrinkles and improves all-over skin tone. It contains salicylic acid to unclog pores, plus AHAs and dioic acid to diminish fine lines, wrinkles and hyper pigmentation, leading to a more even skin tone. This can be used daily after cleansing as part of your evening skincare routine.

Keep the skin hydrated by layering a hydrating serum in your skincare routine. Ensuring the skin is hydrated will prevent any flaking or dryness often associated with anti-blemish products. There are many available, but our favourite is the Jordan Samuel Skin Hydrate facial serum, a heavenly drink for the skin, containing hyaluronic acid which plumps, soothes and hydrates without any irritation and layers well with other skincare.

Treat individual spots with a sulphur-based lotion. For those agonizing  over under-the-skin cysts, a more localised treatment is needed to target the individual spot to prevent it from surfacing. Our recommendation is the Kate Somerville EradiKate Acne Treatment which takes the discomfort and inflammation down overnight, so is a great product to have on hand for those blemish emergencies.

Exfoliate with a chemical exfoliator once a week to remove dead skin cells. The Dr. Dennis Gross Alpha Beta peel pads are a two-step treatment that exfoliate and target uneven texture, enlarged pores, fine lines and wrinkles.
