  • 3

We, as ‘normal’ people spend a lot of time speculating celebrity style, handing out best and worst dressed awards like nobody’s business and loudly championing the style of those we’d most like to emulate. Never do we question who the mastermind is behind the style of some of our favourite celebrities is nor the process of getting the look from rail to red carpet.

It’s time to get to know some of Hollywood’s top stylists.

Kate Young

Clients include: Margot Robbie, Dakota Johnson, Selena Gomez, Natalie Portman, Michelle Williams and Sienna Miller.

A name to know because…

Other than her impressive client roster, Kate Young boasted 1.3 billion media impressions in 2018 as a result of her Oscar week styling for Margot Robbie. Robbie, who was announced as ambassador for Chanel on the day of the show, is among several of Young’s clients who front some of the most coveted luxury labels in the industry. Others include Dakota Johnson for Gucci, Michelle Williams for Louis Vuitton and Natalie Portman for Dior.

Karla Welch

Clients include: Tracee Ellis Ross, Sarah Paulson, Justin Bieber, Elisabeth Moss, Demi Moore.

A name to know because…

Welch has been identified as one of the most powerful stylists in the industry both by The Hollywood Reporter and The New York Times. Having started out styling a shoot for her photographer husband by complete coincidence, Welch has hustled hard.

“I remember thinking, ‘Maybe one day I’ll have a client that goes to an award show!” she told InStyle in an interview earlier this year.

Since then she’s certainly come a long way and styled many a celebrity for many an award show. Working with client Tracee Ellis Ross for her American Music Awards hosting gig in 2017, Welch compiled 11 different outfits for the Black-ish actress. “It was an awards season in one night.”

Petra Flannery

Clients include: Reese Witherspoon, Emma Stone, Amy Adams, Zoe Saldana, Emilia Clarke.

A name to know because…

Another celebrity stylist with a flair for nailing brand ambassadorship, Flannery’s client Emma Stone landed a two year Louis Vuitton deal in October 2017, the value of which is rumoured to be between $6 million and $10 million. For the Oscars red carpet Flannery dressed Stone in a pink and red suit by the brand, abandoning tradition of a gown.

Flannery was also faced with the challenge or creating something simple but powerful for actress-producer-entrepreneur, Reese Witherspoon who helped spearhead the Times Up movement and black Globes carpet. Zac Posen was Flannery’s weapon of choice to deliver on the brief. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Posen described the relationship between Flannery and Witherspoon, “Reese knows what she wants and Petra brings the magic polish.”
