When it comes to upping our game on the exercise front, we all know there’s no better motivation than new workout gear. It may seem superficial but for most of us, looking the part helps boost our confidence to perform to the best of our ability.
If like us, you feel in need of a nudge to get that healthy lifestyle back on track, the Helen Steele x Dunnes Store collection is everything you need and more. The 21 piece collection is available in selected stores and exclusively in Abbey Centre within Northern Ireland. Made up of a selection of leggings, zip front tops and jackets, all of which are complete with vibrant prints custom designed by the Irish artist and designer behind the brand, Helen Steele. Here, The Style Edit editor-in-chief, Jennifer Taggart has selected and styled her favourite pieces from the collection.
Slightly different to her main line designs and her previous collection with Dunnes Stores, in speaking to The Style Edit on the process of creating the collection, Helen said,
“I come at it from the art first and then the clothing so I create the prints and then the shapes are defined from that. But with the sportswear (of this collection), it’s way more intricate so everything is delicately placed and is placed either for performance or to create a positive outcome. So certain prints are placed in certain areas to visually stimulate or to balance.”
The inspiration for the collection was a combination of previous experience working with stylists in providing stagewear for artists like Jessie J and Rita Ora as well as an innocent conversation with her sister while on the school run.
“Myself and my sister were walking her kids to school in Dublin one day and I noticed that everyone was wearing leggings. I couldn’t get over it. Windbreakers, t-shirts, oversized t-shirts – I thought it was mad. I live in a little tiny rural village so it wasn’t a trend I’d seen very much but everyone was wearing leggings. We realised we were both wearing leggings from Dunnes that we’d had for years and had stood the test of time really well. Around the same time, I did an interview about how I personally thought that Dunnes Stores were possibly the most supportive company in Ireland to Irish design and I really think they are. I think even more so than some government-funded bodies. And then people from Dunnes got in touch with me and that got the conversation going. It all happened at the same time. It was fate like it was meant to be. It happened quite organically.”
Throughout all of her work Helen has had a consistent, strong relationship with colour therapy. In a world where we’re constantly fed imagery and content everywhere we turn, an important message for Helen is taking stock of the impact that imagery and the colours around us can have on our mentality. What’s evident in Helen’s designs is the promotion of bright, positive colours which feed into further improving our mood when wearing them. Wave goodbye to the days of monochrome gym gear and prepare for the new lease of life and positive energy this collection will bring into your life.
