Accessories are one of those things we unfairly overlook when embarking on our new season shopping spree. For so long I almost begrudged buying accessories and hated spending money on things like bags and jewellery. It felt that by purchasing these items I was denying myself crucial funds to splurge on that killer coat or show-stopping dress. Around the same time I fell in love with vintage shopping and hunting out pre-loved gems, the same financial constraints that pushed those discoveries also encouraged me to take a more attentive approach to my accessories. Suddenly what once seemed a silly spend totally transformed my outfits and gave clothes I’d grown tired of an entirely new lease of life.
No matter how great an outfit you’ve put together or how varied your wardrobe contents are, accessories give you the added power to really make an outfit your own – whether that’s a subtle finishing touch or the statement piece that brings the outfit to life.

1. Silk Scarves
Silk scarves arguable have the most surprising transformative powers of all of the accessories. It’s an easy and affordable way to add an interesting element to an outfit with minimal effort and adds an expensive air to the look. Wrap it around a ponytail, bun or braid or make your own DIY hairband to up your hair game. Add it to the handle of the simplest of handbags for an instantly expensive look or channel your inner Parisian and pair a white shirt with a neck scarf.
2. Hair Slides
Hair slides quietly made their way to the top of the must-have accessory list and have quickly become every fashion girl’s accessory of choice this season. For once, it’s a trend that encourages us to embrace preppy styles – the preppier the better seems to be the mantra of the style set – creating a powerful contrast against otherwise edgy looks. Think Pandora Sykes, Alexa Chung and their street style set of friends. Tucked in to compliment a ponytail allows you to test the trend in a subtle manner while tackling those baby hairs and stray strands of frizz at the hairline keep the trend centre stage.
3. Pearls Please
Handbags, hair clips or statement earrings, you name it and pearls have made their mark in the accessories game. The new power pearls – whose comeback is down to Irish designer Simone Rocha – take on shades of warm toned gold, embracing natural imperfections and play with proportions. Keep the rest of the look clean to complement pearls in their entirety, pairing with jeans and a white t-shirt or contrasting the femininity of the trend with masculine tailoring.
4. Faux Fur Bags
This season it’s not just the faux fur coats making their way to the wardrobe, the trend has spilled right into our hands – literally – with the rise of faux fur bags among high street retailers and designers alike. The trend made big news on the catwalks with Giambattista Valli and Dries Van Noten taking on a neautral colour scheme while Balenciaga and Moschino embraced the fuchsia faux fur, covering our bases with both staple and statement pieces.
5. Buckle Up
After season upon season of masculine silhouettes, the hourglass is slowly making its comeback. With hourglass figures comes exaggerated waists which means belt trends are here to stay. Those with popper fastenings were incorporated into almost every look within the Victoria Beckham Autumn/Winter show while other designers were hot on her heels with similar trends. According to street style shots, the trend is best shown off when opting for a statement belt to fasten a coat – particularly trench coats. The rule of thumb on the perfect hourglass silhouette is to introduce the belt into the outfit so that the hem of the clothing falls to mid thigh.
