Iconic fashion designer, Kate Spade, has been found dead in her Manhattan apartment aged 55. The talented designer was discovered by her housekeeper in her Park Avenue apartment at 10:20 local time (14.20 GMT). Police are investigating her death as apparent suicide and her death was confirmed under her birth name, Katherine Noel Brosnahan.
Spade, who legally changed her name to Kate Valentine in 2016 to ‘separate the two worlds’ was a much-loved designer of clothes, shoes and jewellery but she was best known for her sought-after accessory line.
The designer, who once edited fashion magazine Mademoiselle, co-founded Kate Spade Handbags in 1993 with husband Andy Spade. The company opened its first store in New York in 1996 with the aim of designing ‘the perfect handbag’. Kate Spade now has more than 300 branches world-wide and, in 2017, was bought by rival designer Coach in a deal worth $2.4bn (£1.8bn). Kate and Andy Spade then went on to set up their second design venture – Frances Valentine, named after their daughter.
Her death marks a devastating loss for her family, friends and the entire fashion industry.
