Wow, ok so the sun is out, it’s over 20 degrees, the summer holiday season is but a weekend away and almost without warning we’re expected to wear less clothing and reveal the parts of our body we’ve been protecting these last few months. As we become more aware of the importance of body positivity, terms such as bikini bod and summer diet tend to make our toes curl even more than they once did but regardless of how comfortable we each are in our bodies and swimsuits, each and every one of us want to feel good when lying by the pool. Am I right?

This summer sees the near rejection of the itsy bitsy teenie weenie bikini and in its place, a revival of the classic summer staple, the swimsuit. All hail the almighty one piece, here to take back her crown and return to holiday wardrobes in all of her glory. We’ve had our eye on Jacquemus’s burnt orange number since spring/summer ‘19 collections hit the runway earlier this year – a strapless one-piece safe from nip-slip incidents thanks to the cross-over straps, paired with white strappy sandals and a giant fringed bag of the same shade. Gone are the days of boring connotations associated with the swimsuit.
As for Chanel who transformed Paris’s Grand Palais into the tranquil beach our daydreams are currently made of, they took the opportunity to create the perfect backdrop for a monochrome asymmetric maillot, chic and one shoulder, complete with a straw hat of monochrome relation staying true to the French chic vibe the brand revolves around.

Where the revival came from, we can’t be totally sure without getting into the wonderful, creative minds of the industry’s top designers and forecasters. Taking a stab at a good guess, however, might reveal a connection to the rise of athleisure in a health-conscious generation. Plus, available in a mass of sizes, fit, style and shapes, there’s a swimsuit style for everyone regardless of your age, body shape or even lifestyle. Here, Vogue takes a more analytical look at the rise of the one piece trend with an entertaining review of the Davine swimsuit from Agent Provocateur straight from their Mayfair showroom.
Finding the right swimsuit can feel a lot like love at first sight but like all good things in life, you may need to kiss a few frogs to really find ‘the one’. There’s a lot to consider from fit, confidence and purpose as well as quality and price. We particularly like this article from Teen Vogue where they spoke to a group of women who take the swimsuit trend truly in their stride and asked them to share their tips on finding the ultimate summer swimsuit.
