The Trend Edit: AW’18

  • 20

It’s that time of year again, the long hot summer is behind us and the new season has officially arrived! Autumn/Winter 2018 presents a bold and beautiful offering of indulgent trends ready to take a fresh fashion frontier by storm. To save you a little time and effort THE STYLE EDIT walks you through the key trends that are fast filtering onto the street style scene and into your favourite stores…

Much like last season, the A/W shows offered a plethora of prints. While it may not be a groundbreaking fashion concept, animal print has reared its furry head once again in all its glory. Noticeably favoured across all four fashion weeks this season, we saw leopard, tiger, zebra, cheetah and snake prints prowling down the runways for AW’18. While classic, neutral tones remain, this year sees multicoloured adaptations take central stage. Wild stripes, speckled spots and python patterns offer their most shameless of ensembles when worn head-to-toe. Make sure it’s faux, but go big, go bold and go wild!

Strapped for cash? This trend puts tin foil in the style spotlight as we saw catwalk collections adopt a sci-fi streak for Autumn/Winter. This season, design houses across the board have decided that frosty, futuristic silver is the metal to shine in. Think less Christmas tinsel, more high-shine lamé meets holographic highlights. Feeling bold? Wear it head-to-toe, from your bag to your boots. If you’d rather opt for a slightly more wearable take on the trend, silver beading and sequins are the favourites for seasonal party ensembles.

We’re delighted – the A/W season ignites a brand new love affair with the most effortless garment to date: the cape. This time around, the cape has embraced a versatile update and can be worked into any winter wardrobe with ease. Think less superhero, more cosy picnic blanket meets your favourite boutique finds. Structured and sharp, or soft and sumptuous – look no further for your must-have investment piece this season.

Time to hoak out your favourite retro scarves! Forget Grandma’s stuffy silks, this trend encompasses eccentric glamour in abundance. Get creative this season as we see signature silk scarves transformed into elaborate handkerchief-hemmed skirts and one-of-a-kind dresses. Tie the classic square-cut scarf into slinky shapes, knot your headscarf at the neck or style up your silks with contrasting prints and patterns.

Chestnut, caramel, biscuit, beige and rust… autumnal tones in all their splendor are celebrated this season. They may not sound like the most exciting hues but you have permission to experiment and explore beyond this well-behaved palette. With a penchant for the past, fashion finds a way to lure us back to the signature style decade of the Seventies, as the retro mood continues into shaggy shearling and suede silhouettes. If your shade is in this spectrum, you’re winning this winter.

Perhaps in preparation for a harsh winter ahead, this season’s collections turn outerwear up a notch. We’re talking function meets fashion, as layers take on layers. Who said just one coat would do? When battling the winter elements, throw your coat on over your jacket, add a puffa or ANOTHER waterproof layer. If nothing else, your heating bill will benefit – and who doesn’t like to be cosy?
