During our annual spring clean, it seems the majority of us got ruthless on the denim shorts front. Finally, we can all breathe a sigh of relief as the days of hot pants and tight denim shorts are a thing of the past. Admittedly, we can’t imagine short shorts will be wiped out completely particularly given their convenience as beach and poolside cover ups but this year retailers and street style predictions have seen an influx of long, Bermuda style shorts making moves on our summer wardrobes.
What once seemed a one-stop shop suddenly requires – or more accurately, allows – time to decide the best short trend that prescribes to your style and body shape. So what are the options?
Ah, how the cynics were proved wrong with this one. We’ll put our hands up and say we were there with them, sceptical of the longevity of this trend but now that they’re here to stay, we’re actually quite pleased to see them. Reminiscent of the days when leggings were a major trend, cycling shorts allow us to indulge in a laid back approach to the bottom half of our outfit while also maintaining a smart, tailored look by introducing blazers and oversized shirts throughout the rest of your look.

Much to many people’s surprise, the last few months have seen the introduction of Bermuda shorts into the fashion scene. Never heard of them before? Here’s what you need to know. According to Harper’s Bazaar, Bermuda shorts are “a spectacularly specific cut that combines a straight leg cut with a hem that sits right above the knee, one inch or less.”
A little old school and similar to basketball shorts, this trend takes some getting used to but in the fashion world, all of the best trends do. It’s a tough trend to pull off but the key is to embrace it. Balance out proportions with a bodysuit or vest top, strong sunglasses and a nod to empowered femininity throughout. In a world overwhelmed with floral maxi dresses, this trend keeps summer fashion fresh and the fashion folk on their toes.
Long denim shorts
Though short shorts of the denim kind may have been culled from our wardrobes, we’re not ready to banish the material completely. Short shorts have had a grown up makeover with many combining the concept of cycling shorts and Bermuda styles with the familiarity of denim wear. As fashion strikes again with an ode to the nineties, this trend, in particular, could mark the end of the short shorts reign for good.

Utility trends took runways by storm throughout showcases of spring summer collections this year. In the last few months, we’ve seen and celebrated the rise of boilersuits, the return of cinched waists and left no cuff unturned. This time, it’s the turn of safari shorts to show us how spring summer tailoring is really done. The ultimate versatile piece for any wardrobe, dress up with a hint of lace and your take on the short suit or keep it casual with a crisp white tee and classic white trainers and revel in the glory of making safari shorts your go-to look for the summer of 2019.
