‘Tweakments’ – Dr Edel Woods On The Top Three Interventions For Women Who Want To Maintain Their Look For Longer

The popularity of medical aesthetic treatments continues to grow at a ferocious pace and now more than ever, aesthetic treatments are becoming a greater part of the overall wellness and self-care conversation. With this in mind, there is a new breed of aesthetic treatment focus on helping clients to look like the best version of themselves for longer. This shift of focus from eliciting change to preservation is very welcome and it has heralded a new cohort of treatments otherwise known as ‘tweakments’.

At the top of the list of ‘tweakments’ is Profhilo. Often called ‘injectable glow’, this treatment replenishes the skins moisture levels and helps to soften fine lines. It also improves the skin’s texture and gives a ‘filter-finish’ to the skin without increasing volume or changing your look.  Not only this, but Profhilo also kick-starts your own collagen and elastin production. Collagen is responsible for the plump skin of youth, while elastin gives skin the spring-back quality we associate with looking healthy & well. As we age, collagen and elastin production, as well as, the skins natural moisture level decreases. By undertaking a treatment like Profhilo we are helping to slow the visible effects of this decrease in hydration, collagen and elasticity. A minimum of two treatments is required with four weeks between treatments. For maintenance, it is recommended that you have a Profhilo treatment at least twice per year.

Second, on my list has to be skin peels. They improve the appearance of fine lines, pigmentation and will give dull skin back its glow. Don’t worry modern-day peels won’t leave you looking like Samantha from Sex and the City. Regular light to medium depth peels will give progressive results without the downtime.  Peels work by regularizing the process of cell turnover. In youth, our skin cells turnover very quickly but unfortunately as we age this process slows and we hang onto the old, dead and dull surface cells for longer. This results in skin that feels dry and lacks the glow of youth. For healthy skin with good texture, tone and softened lines having a peel once every 4-6 weeks can, in combination with high-quality homecare, have transformative effects.

Third, on my list of go-to  ‘tweakments’ is Aquagold. It is an FDA approved needling device that allows your medical practitioner to formulate a bespoke skin ‘cocktail’ for you. In the USA, this treatment is very popular pre-event and is often referred to as the ‘Botox facial’. The name derives from the fact that your medical aesthetics doctor can formulate a bespoke ‘cocktail’ that includes micro-doses of Botulinum toxin A. Using Botulinum Toxin A in this way does not impact on muscle movement but can dramatically improve pore size. This level of customization is unique to Aquagold and blends can be made up to target a myriad of skin concerns from pores to fine lines and redness. Again, the downtime is minimal and this is a great treatment to consider the week before a big event. It’s important to be aware however that Botulinum toxin A is a prescription-only medication and therefore only registered doctors and dentists can provide this treatment.

The growth in the ‘tweakment’ arena is fantastic as we can now more than ever minimize the unwanted signs of ageing without the tell-tale signs of having had a treatment Nonetheless, we as practitioners do understand that people can be confused about what treatment to have and where to go. The above is a quick guide to my top treatments but there are much more available on the market.  My best advice to those considering a ‘tweakment’ is to consider a consultation with a qualified and insured practitioner. Arm yourself with as much information as possible and never feel pressured into any particular treatment.
