Why CBD Is The Latest Skincare Superhero

It’s used to treat everything from cancer, to anxiety and epilepsy and now CBD is making its way into our beauty cabinets.

Derived from the hemp plant, cannabidiol, or CBD as it is more commonly known, has natural anti-inflammation properties, vitamins A, D, and E, and essential fatty acids making it great for muscle balms, face creams, serums, lotions and more.

So how does it work? Well, there is a growing body of evidence that suggests that CBD interacts with the body’s endocannabinoid system which regulates many functions in the body. Research has shown that, used topically, it can help dry skin conditions, psoriasis and eczema as well as acne and as an anti-aging agent.

Celebrity fans include Jennifer Aniston, Kim Kardashian and Gwenyth Paltrow and it is estimated that the American CBD market could reach $16 billion by 2025. In an interview with the New York Times Olivia Wilde preached its benefits saying: “Recently I did a play on Broadway for six months. My body was wrecked, [and] my neck was really tight. The CBD has relaxing benefits, and the idea is to avoid using too many painkillers.”

With more and more mainstream beauty brands harnessing the power of this natural wonder product it seems set to become a staple ingredient in our skincare routines.

One brand already utilising CBD is Irish brand, Celtic Wind. Born from founder, Paul McCourt’s long standing interest in the enduring power and rich history of the humble hemp plant (used in many ways since the dawn of the agricultural revolution), Paul developed Celtic Wind, a fully sustainable, Irish hemp business focused on premium products and supplements that are all 100% natural.

Grown in harmony with the Irish climate and soil Celtic Wind’s CBD is like no other; rather than extract CBD from the hemp plant, they use cold pressing techniques to squeeze the whole of the hemp plant goodness into the bottle. This means that the oil, complete with 150 compounds and nutrients, is more effectively absorbed by the skin resulting in an innovative range.

The Australian-based MGC Pharmaceuticals, parent company of MGC Derma, develops medical cannabis products for treating conditions from Alzheimer’s to autism. The human body has an incredible biological affinity to this plant, and when it comes to wellbeing through ingestion or topical application, the use of quality, whole- plant extracted CBD can have hugely beneficial anti-inflammatory, calming and protective effects on our skin. MGC Derma developed skincare because they could see the benefits of the anti- inflammatory ingredients on the pharmaceutical side.

So it seems whether it’s for skincare or all-round health, you need to have CBD on your bathroom shelf in 2020.
